Are you a Shrek fan? Shrek is a 2001 computer-animated, fantasy comedy film loosely based on the 1990 fairytale picture book of the same name by American author William Steig. DreamWorks Animation and PDI co-produced Shrek. Paramount Pictures released the film to theaters on May 18, 2001. Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, the film stars Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad).

What is Shrek About

Shrek is about an ogre named Shrek. One morning he wakes to find his swamp overrun with fairytale creatures. The evil Lord Farquaad banished them from the kingdom of Duloc because they do not fit in with his view of a perfect world.

Shrek wants them out of his swamp, so he makes a deal with Lord Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona in exchange for his swamp back. On his journey, he meets a Donkey who soon becomes his annoying sidekick. Together, they set off to rescue Fiona and the fairytale creatures from the tyranny of Lord Farquaad.

Shrek Saves DreamWorks

Did you know Shrek saved DreamWorks? He sure did. DreamWorks was struggling to find its identity at the time. Shrek brought together the perfect mix of fantasy and comedy, giving DreamWorks the template they needed to create more hit movies like Kung Foo Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.

Released in May of 2001, Shrek generated $487 million worldwide. The film received praise for its soundtrack and also for its animation, writing, humor, and voice performances. It also won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Shrek even got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010.

Shrek Facts You Didn’t Know

Here’s a fact about the movie you probably didn’t know. Chris Farley was originally cast as the voice of Shrek, but he died before recording all of the dialogue. Michael Myers replaced Farley and gave him his famous Scottish accent.
